Can I extend my filter life if I use less water?
Great question! If your household uses less water than average, you might wonder whether you can stretch your filter a bit longer. Here's what we recommend.
Filter Lifespan: Time vs. Volume
Santevia filters have two replacement guidelines — time and volume — and you should replace based on whichever comes first:
Filter | Time | Volume |
MINA Filter | 2 months | 300 L / 80 gal |
Fluoride Filter (Gravity/Glass) | 4 months | 1,200 L / 317 gal |
5-Stage Filter (Gravity/Glass) | 6 months | 1,800 L / 475 gal |
Ceramic Pre-filter | 1 year | N/A |
Mineral Stones | 2 years | N/A |
Why Time Matters Even with Low Usage
Even if you haven't reached the volume limit, we recommend replacing your filter by the time guideline because:
Bacteria can grow in filters that sit with standing water for extended periods.
Filter media degrades over time, even with minimal use.
The activated carbon becomes less effective at absorbing contaminants as it ages.
Tips for Low-Usage Households
Filter only what you'll drink in a day or two to minimize standing water.
If you're going away for more than a week, empty the system and let the filters dry.
When you return, re-condition the filters before use (rinse under running water for 1–2 minutes).
Bottom Line
We don't recommend extending beyond the time-based guideline, even with lower usage. The time limit exists to ensure your water stays safe and tastes great.
